Abu-Laheeb Shaazili

The family of Hazrat Umair (may Allah be pleased with him) used to have a cake of barley which they used to give Haris to eat and they used to sleep hungry, so much so that the family faced hardships. Then Hazrat Umair (RA) said to Haaris that you made us hungry.

HazratUmair Bin Saad (may Allah be pleased with him) was a glorious disciple of the Messenger and a focused worshipper. Hazrat Umar  sent him to Humus as its Governor. He stayed there for a year. Meanwhile, Hazrat Umar  dint receive any news from his side. Hazrat Umar  asked his chirographer to write: ‘Come, see me as soon as you receive this letter. Bring whatever you have accumulated from the spoils of war of Muslims (mal-e-ghneemat). Leave as soon as you read this’

Hazrat Umair (may Allah be pleased with him)’s Total Property:

Hazrat Umair (RA) took his bag. He put his food and bowl in it. He hanged the water-utensil around his neck and took his small spear and started walking on foot from Hamas. So much so that he reached Medina. Historians say that when he reached Medina, his color had changed. His face was covered with dust. And his hair had grown. He went to hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said Assalam-o-alaikum, o commander of the faithful. Hazrat Umar (RA) asked,”How are you?” Hazrat Umair (RA) said,”how do you see my situation? Are you not seeing me that I am physically normal, pure blooded son, and with me is the world in a way that I am pulling it from its horn.” Hazrat Umar (RA) said,”What do have with you?” And he had this doubt that hazrat Umair (RA) may have brought some property. Hazrat Umair (RA) said, ”I have a leather bag in which I keep my food. And I have a cup from which I eat. And I wash my head and clothes with it too. And I have a pitcher of water in which I keep water for performing ablution. And I have a small spear on which I anchor to rest. And with which I compete with the enemy, if he appears in front of me. Thus, I swear upon Allah that world is subservient to my property.” Hazrat Umar (RA) asked, ”Have you come here barefooted?” He said yes. Hazrat Umar (RA) said,”Do you not have a person with you who would have treated you well by giving you conveyance and could have ridden it?” Hazrat Umair (RA) said,”Neither did people offer me anything, nor did I demand anything from them. I left them while they were offering morning prayers.” Hazrat Umar (RA) asked,”Where is that thing for which I had sent you there? And what did you do?” Hazrat Umair (RA) said,”What is the meaning of your question, commander of the faithful?” Hazrat Umar (RA) anxiously said SubhaanAllah. Hazrat Umair (RA) said, ”Listen, if I had not feared the thing that you will become sad, I would not have informed you, I gathered the pious people of that place and I made them caretaker of their capture and treasury. When those people collected all the captured property I indulged them in spending it wisely.

1.2 Arrival of the Guest

Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “So then you did not bring anything for me?” He said no. Hazrat Umar (RA) said,”Prepare a new agreement for the friendship of hazrat Umair (RA).” Hazrat Umair (RA) said, ”Being wealthy is such a thing, that neither would I work for you about this thing, nor for anyone after you. I swear by Allah! That I could not save myself. Rather I did not even remain a firm Muslim. I had said to a Christian, O man, may Allah defame you. Thus, this is the reality of wealth. O Umar! For which you appointed me that was the worst day of my days. O Umar! This is that day that I became a governor with you.” After this he begged leave from hazrat Umar (RA) and went home. Historians say that there was a difference of many miles between him and Medina. When hazrat Umair (RA) went back, hazrat Umar (RA) gave 100 dinars to a man named Haaris and said to him, ”go to hazrat Umair (RA) and stay with him in such a manner as if you are a guest. And if you see a sign of prosperity, come back immediately to me. And if you see poverty, give him these 100 dinars.” Thus, Haaris went to him. He saw that hazrat Umair (RA) was sitting on the edge of a garden. And that he is watching for lice in his shirt. This man paid his salutations to hazrat Umair (RA). Hazrat Umair (RA) said,”Come! May Allah have mercy on you.” Thus, he sat there. Then hazrat Umair asked him, ”Where have you come from?” He said, ”From Medina.” Hazrat Umair (RA) asked, ”in which state did you leave commander of the faithful?” He said, ”He is fine.” hazrat Umair (RA) asked, ”In which state did you leave the Muslims.” He said, ”All are fine.” Hazrat Umair (RA) said, ”Are the limits and punishments of shariah not applied?” He said, ”yes they are applied. Just now a punishment was given to his son for the case of adultery. Thus, he died of his beating.” Hazrat Umair (RA) said, ”O Allah! Help Umar (RA)! As far as I have knowledge about him, he loves you a lot.” The historians say that Haaris stayed with for three days. The family of hazrat Umair (RA) used to have a cake of barley which they used to give to Haaris to eat. And they themselves used to stay hungry. So much so that the family faced severe difficulty. Then hazrat Umair (RA) said, ”You have made us destitute. If you find it pertinent, go somewhere else from here.”

1.3 Hazrat Umair (may Allah be pleased with him) and Coins

The historians say that Haaris took out those coins and tried to give them and said, ”Commander of the faithful has sent these to you. Seek help with these.” Historians say that after hearing this hazrat Umair (RA) shouted and said, ”I do not have any need for them, return them back.” hazrat Umair’s (RA) wife said to him, ”You should take them if you need them. Otherwise spend them in their rightful purpose.” Hazrat Umair (RA) said, ”I swear upon Allah, I do not have any need for them.” After this hazrat Umair took him out and distributed among the children of martyrs and poor people and came back. Haaris went back to hazrat Umar (RA) and told him about the whole situation. Hazrat Umar (RA) called him again and asked him, ”What did you do of those coins?” He said, ”I sent them forward for my sawaab (reward of good deeds in the afterlife).” Hazrat Umar (RA) said, ”May Allah have mercy on you.” And he ordered one dasaq (212 kilograms almost) grains and two cloths. hazrat Umair (RA) said, ”I do not have any need for grains. That which I have left in my house which is almost 7 kilos, till the time I finish that Allah almighty will give me more.” And he did not take grains. And he said about both the cloths, ”so and so person’s mother does not have clothes. I take them for her.” And came back to his house. A little time had passed that he came back and passed away. may Allah have mercy on him.

When hazrat Umar (RA) heard about his death, it was very difficult for him to hear of the loss and he prayed mercy for him.

Hazrat Umar (RA) was walking towards Baqee Gharqad that some of his companions accompanied him. Hazrat Umar (RA) said, ”Each one of you should describe his wish.” Listening to this one person said, ”Commander of the faithful! I like that if I had money and I would have freed so much slaves in the path of Allah.” Another said, ”O commander of the faithful! I like that if I had money I would have spent it in the path of Allah.” Another one of them said, ”I like that if I had strength I would have pulled water from Zamzam with a pitcher and would have given it to drink for the pilgrims of Bait-ullah.
